Islamabad: At the first virtual session of the Summit of the Future Global Call at the United Nations in New York, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif called for substantial reforms in the international financial system to better meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Prime Minister Sharif emphasized the necessity for enhanced concessional financing, increased Official Development Assistance, and greater support from multilateral development banks to empower economically weaker countries to combat global challenges and achieve the SDGs.
During his address, Sharif presented a comprehensive plan targeting innovative financial solutions such as climate debt swaps and equitable debt relief mechanisms. He stressed the importance of ensuring that technological advancements remain accessible to all nations, especially those in the Global South, to promote widespread empowerment and prevent potential misuse.
The Prime Minister highlighted the crucial role of international cooperation in addressing global issues such as climate vulnerability, terrorism, and disinformation, which are exacerbated by existing injustices and inequalities. He pointed out that the situation in Gaza starkly illustrates the shortcomings of global unity and justice.
