Karachi: In a crucial meeting held at the Chief Minister’s House, Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif and Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah discussed strategies to ensure the timely completion of several significant federal initiatives in Sindh, including major transportation and energy projects aimed at enhancing the province’s infrastructure and reducing utility costs.

According to Chief Minister Sindh, the meeting focused on advancing the BRT Red Line and Yellow Line projects, with work on the Red Line actively progressing and plans to commence the Yellow Line shortly. The leaders also deliberated on the Karachi Circular Railway project, which is expected to alleviate the city’s chronic traffic issues. Prime Minister Sharif assured that efforts are being made to integrate the KCR project into the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) priority plan, reflecting a collaboration with Chinese authorities.

The discussion extended to the energy sector, particularly the challenges posed by rising electricity costs. The leaders agreed to transition all coal-fired power projects to utilize Thar coal, aiming to reduce production costs and extend economic relief to the public. Additionally, the Sindh government plans to distribute two lakh solar home systems to low-income households, helping to mitigate their electricity expenses.

Another key topic was the K-IV water project, crucial for augmenting Karachi’s water supply. The Prime Minister committed to instructing the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) to expedite the project, which is being handled in conjunction with the Sindh government’s efforts on related infrastructure enhancements.

The leaders also reviewed the progress of the Hub Canal Project, designed to overhaul existing canals and construct new ones to deliver water to Karachi’s West, Kemari, and Central districts. Furthermore, they agreed to fast-track the development of a 105-km railway line from the Thar Coalfield to Chur, which will facilitate coal transportation for power plants and industrial units nationwide.

This meeting underscores a shared commitment between federal and provincial leadership to address Karachi’s infrastructural and economic challenges through collaborative efforts and strategic planning.
