Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif marked the United Nations’ 79th anniversary by reiterating Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism and the principles outlined in the UN Charter. In a statement posted on social media, he emphasized Pakistan’s dedication to collaborating with the UN to create a world that protects and upholds the rights of all, especially those who are engaged in struggles for their just and inalienable rights.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Prime Minister Sharif highlighted the importance of recommitting to the UN Charter’s core principles, which serve as a foundation for global peace and prosperity. Addressing the rising number of conflicts and crises worldwide, including climate change, geopolitical tensions, and economic challenges facing the Global South, he expressed concern over what he described as a fractured global order.
The Prime Minister called attention to the UN’s difficulty in enforcing its Charter equitably, particularly concerning issues of self-determination for people under foreign occupation, notably in Palestine and Jammu and Kashmir. He noted that these unresolved issues underline the pressing need for global powers to honor the UN’s founding principles. Until the provisions of the UN Charter are upheld universally, he warned, global conflicts would continue to escalate.
