Prime Minister Directs Immediate Withdrawal of Controversial Immunity Proposal

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has ordered the immediate withdrawal of a proposed constitutional amendment that sought to grant immunity to the Prime Minister. The amendment, introduced by several senators from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), was met with disapproval from the Prime Minister, who emphasized the importance of accountability.

In a statement posted on his official X account, Sharif expressed his firm stance that an elected Prime Minister must remain fully accountable to both the judicial system and the public. He underscored that accountability is a fundamental principle of governance.

The Prime Minister revealed that upon returning from an official visit to Azerbaijan, he was informed about the submission of the amendment by PML-N senators. He acknowledged their intentions were in good faith but clarified that the proposal was not included in the Cabinet-approved legislative draft.

The decision to withdraw the amendment reflects the Prime Minister’s commitment to maintaining transparency and accountability within the government. This move is seen as an effort to reinforce public trust and uphold democratic principles.
