Prime Minister Announces Wide-Scale Privatization of Government Enterprises in Pakistan

Islamabad, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has declared the government’s intention to privatize all non-strategic government-owned enterprises, retaining only those deemed strategically important. This decision was made during a review meeting focused on the activities of the Ministry of Privatization and the Privatization Commission.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Prime Minister emphasized that the government’s role is not to manage businesses but to foster a conducive environment for business and investment. He directed all federal ministries to support the Privatization Commission’s efforts and mandated that the privatization processes, including that of the Pakistan International Airlines Company Limited, be televised live to ensure transparency.

Further details revealed during the meeting include the completion of the pre-qualification process for the privatization of Pakistan International Airlines by the end of the month. Additionally, the privatization of Power Distribution Companies has been slated in the new Privatization Program for 2024-2029. The program prioritizes the privatization of loss-making enterprises and plans to accelerate the process by appointing a pre-qualified panel of experts to the Privatization Commission.
