Press Freedom Under Siege in India, Particularly Dire in Kashmir: RSF Index

Paris, The 2024 World Press Freedom Index has detailed a severe crisis in press freedom across India, exacerbated under the governance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with a particularly alarming situation in Kashmir. The report, issued by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), underscores the harassment and prolonged detention of journalists in the region, painting a bleak picture for media independence in the world’s most populous democracy.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the RSF index, which ranked India 159th globally, indicates a troubling trend of persecution against journalists, media acquisitions by Modi-aligned businessmen, and the implementation of more stringent laws despite the country’s democratic facade. The situation in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir is especially concerning, with reports of journalists facing harassment by police and paramilitary forces, and some being held in “provisional” detention for years.

The report criticizes the Indian media landscape, noting the near-total ownership of mainstream media by wealthy magnates close to Modi, such as Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani. This concentration of media ownership signals the end of pluralism in Indian journalism. The report also highlights the rise of “Godi media,” outlets known for their populist and pro-BJP propaganda, which further undermines press independence.

Journalists in India face significant risks, including online harassment, physical attacks, and legal challenges, particularly when their work criticizes the government. The RSF report notes an alarming rate of journalist killings, averaging three to four per year, positioning India as one of the most dangerous countries worldwide for media professionals.

In conclusion, the RSF report paints a somber picture of press freedom in India, indicating a marked decline since Modi’s rise to power in 2014. It calls attention to the need for international scrutiny and advocacy to protect journalists and uphold democratic values in the media sphere.
