Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari marked Jammu Martyrs’ Day, paying tribute to Kashmiri Muslims killed in Jammu in November 1947. He emphasized the need for international intervention in the ongoing human rights issues in the region.
According to Press Information Department, President Zardari highlighted the tragic events of November 6, 1947, when forces of the Dogra ruler, supported by extremist militias, perpetrated violence against Jammu’s Muslim community. Thousands were killed, and many were displaced, leaving lasting impacts on the region’s demographic and social fabric. The president stressed that these historical atrocities must not be forgotten.
Human rights violations in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) continue to be a concern, with reports from Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch documenting arbitrary detentions, media suppression, and other issues. UN experts have expressed concerns over torture and custodial deaths. Zardari urged global attention to the use of sweeping security laws in India and called for accountability and protection for religious minorities and other vulnerable groups.
He criticized the rhetoric of right-wing political figures and extremist groups in India, especially following the military conflict in May 2025, cautioning against the risks of fuelling persecution and adventurism. The president reiterated Pakistan’s desire for peace but underscored its commitment to sovereignty and security.
Zardari called for a peaceful resolution to the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, in line with UN resolutions and the Kashmiri people’s aspirations. He urged India to reverse measures taken since August 5, 2019, and facilitate self-determination for the Kashmiri people. He also appealed to the international community and the United Nations to act on concerns raised by human rights organizations and ensure investigations into alleged violations.
The president affirmed Pakistan’s commitment to advocating for the Kashmiri cause on international platforms and extended support to the Kashmiri people in their quest for self-determination. He concluded by honoring the martyrs and expressing solidarity with those enduring separation and suffering.
