Islamabad, President Asif Ali Zardari emphasized the urgent need for international collaboration to combat climate change during a meeting with the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, Mr. Mukhtar Babayev, who is also the President-designate of the upcoming COP 29 conference.
According to Press Information Department, the discussions highlighted the critical importance of adopting environment-friendly technologies, promoting afforestation, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. President Zardari pointed out the severe impacts of global warming on Pakistan, including its adverse effects on glaciers and water scarcity. With Azerbaijan set to host COP 29 in Baku in November 2024, the President expressed hope that the conference would establish a New Collective Quantified Goal on Finance, aiding developing nations like Pakistan in their climate finance efforts.
The meeting also covered potential areas for strengthening bilateral relations, particularly in tourism and culture. President Zardari reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to deepen ties with Azerbaijan, emphasizing enhanced bilateral exchanges and people-to-people contacts.
