President of Pakistan Lauds Newspapers on National Readership Day, Urges Promotion of Democratic Values


Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari of Pakistan celebrated National Newspaper Readership Day by acknowledging the critical role of newspapers in enhancing political awareness and guiding public opinion. In his message released on September 24, 2024, President Zardari commended newspapers for their pivotal role in democracy and urged them to uphold high journalistic standards in the fight against misinformation.



According to Press Information Department, President Zardari extended his congratulations to the All-Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) and highlighted the importance of newspapers in informing citizens about their rights, responsibilities, and current affairs. He emphasized the necessity for newspapers to foster moral, ethical, and democratic values while educating the public on socio-economic issues. The President also called for the promotion of tolerance, inter-faith harmony, patriotism, civic responsibility, and respect for human rights.



In his statement, President Zardari pointed out the challenges posed by the digital age, such as the rapid spread of misinformation and fake news. He stressed the need for newspapers to leverage modern Information Technology to ensure the accuracy and depth of their reporting. By focusing on facts over sensationalism, newspapers can effectively counter false information and contribute to a well-informed public.



President Zardari also underscored the role of a responsible press in providing a platform for marginalized voices and fostering healthy discussions on significant issues. He affirmed the government’s support for a free and responsible press, which he described as essential for the successful functioning of democracy and shaping informed public opinion on matters of both national and international relevance.
