President Alvi Approves Sentence Remission for Women and Children Prisoners

Islamabad, President Dr. Arif Alvi has authorized a reduction in sentences for women and children prisoners on compassionate grounds, a move that underscores the government’s commitment to humane treatment and rehabilitation.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the presidential remission is being implemented under Article 45 of the Constitution and targets women and children who have been sentenced to two years or less. This act of clemency reflects a broader effort to address the conditions of vulnerable populations within the penal system and is aligned with principles of justice and compassion.

However, the remission does not extend to individuals convicted of serious offenses including murder, espionage, kidnapping, theft, robbery, as well as crimes specified under the Hudood Ordinance, Anti-Terrorism Act, Foreign Nationals, and Narcotics Control law. This delineation ensures that the gesture of leniency is balanced with considerations for public safety and the severity of the crimes committed.
