Islamabad: Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari has announced an extensive restructuring initiative for the National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC), which will be divided into three distinct companies. This move is aimed at ensuring an effective and cost-efficient power supply across the nation.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, during a news conference in Islamabad, the minister emphasized the need for significant reform within the NTDC, which was highlighted during ongoing efforts to implement a comprehensive energy reforms agenda. The restructuring is intended to facilitate smoother operations within the power sector.
The initiative will lead to the establishment of an independent system market operator, which is designed to enhance the buying and selling of electricity within the market. Additionally, a national grid company of Pakistan will be formed to improve the management of the electricity supply system. The third entity, named the Energy Infrastructure Development and Management Company, will focus on ensuring timely, transparent, and cost-effective execution of all power projects.
The minister outlined that the restructuring process is scheduled to be completed by February of the following year, with the new companies set to become fully operational by that time. Furthermore, he highlighted the three-month Electricity Sahulat Package announced by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as a significant step toward providing affordable electricity to consumers.
Sardar Awais Leghari reiterated the government’s commitment to reducing electricity prices permanently. In response to questions, he noted that Pakistan is a leading consumer of clean energy in the region and has no contribution to climate change. He also projected that over the next decade, 88 percent of Pakistan’s energy consumption will be derived from clean energy sources.
