Posters in Kashmir Valley Urge UN to Implement 1949 Resolution

Srinagar, Posters calling for the United Nations to address the Kashmir dispute in accordance with its resolution from January 1949 have surfaced in Srinagar and other areas of the Kashmir valley in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. These posters, appearing in public places, highlight the region’s ongoing political and human rights issues.

According to Kashmir Media Service, these posters, put up by pro-freedom organizations, demand the United Nations’ attention towards the persistent denial of the Kashmiris’ right to self-determination. This right was recognized by the UN Security Council in a resolution passed on January 5, 1949. The posters allege that the Narendra Modi-led Indian government, backed by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has stripped the Kashmiris of their basic rights and is currently confiscating their properties, lands, houses, shops, and offices under harsh laws.

The message on the posters accuses the Indian government of imposing the RSS’s Hindutva agenda and violating international laws in what they regard as a UN-recognized disputed territory. They claim that India is treating the Kashmiris as slaves devoid of fundamental rights. The posters emphasize the UN’s responsibility to implement its resolutions to resolve the Kashmir dispute and alleviate the suffering of the people facing what they describe as atrocities by the Indian forces.

These posters have also gained visibility on social media platforms, including Facebook and “X”, drawing attention to the longstanding conflict and the local population’s appeal for international intervention.
