Srinagar: In the lead-up to the anniversary of the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, posters have surfaced throughout Srinagar and other areas of Indian-administered Kashmir. These posters call on residents to mark August 5 as a Black Day in protest of the Indian government’s actions in 2019.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the posters feature images of detained leaders from the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, including Massarat Alam Butt, Shabbir Ahmed Shah, Muhammad Yasin Malik, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Aasiya Andrabi, and Nayeem Ahmed Khan. These leaders are depicted in a campaign to reverse the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A, a change that removed the region’s special autonomous status under Indian law on August 5, 2019.
The campaign, coordinated by various Hurriyat parties, also demands the resolution of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with United Nations resolutions, the release of political detainees, and an end to alleged human rights abuses by Indian forces. The posters, which have also been shared widely on social media platforms like WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, reflect a continued resistance against Indian policies in the region.
