Islamabad, Romina Khurshid Alam, the Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change, has advocated for a unified approach to address the escalating challenges posed by climate change in Pakistan.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, speaking at the ‘Disaster-Resilient Pakistan’ seminar organized by the National Disaster Management Authority, Alam highlighted the government’s comprehensive policy measures aimed at mitigating the nation’s climate vulnerability. She stressed the importance of public-private partnerships and called on the private sector to actively participate in government-led climate resilience initiatives.
Alam detailed several ongoing projects under the government’s climate policies, including the National Environment Policy, National Climate Change Policy, National Forest Policy, the Pakistan Climate Change Act (2017), and Green Building Codes. She cited the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood Risk Reduction project, Living Indus Initiative, Recharge Pakistan, and Green Pakistan Programme, which has resulted in the planting of over 2.1 billion tree saplings nationwide.
She concluded by warning that inaction would exacerbate the vulnerability of critical socio-economic sectors like agriculture, energy, water, health, and education.
