Baku: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has urged the international community to fulfill their financial commitments to address climate change. Addressing the Climate Action Summit COP-29 in Baku, he expressed regret that promises made at previous summits remain unfulfilled.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Prime Minister stressed the need for climate finance to be grant-based to avoid increasing the debt burden on vulnerable developing nations. He highlighted that without climate justice, achieving resilience would be impossible.
Shehbaz Sharif cited the 2022 floods in Pakistan as an example of the devastating impact of climate change, despite the country’s minimal contribution to global emissions. He emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to global climate solutions, highlighting efforts to produce 60% of energy from clean sources and transition 30% of vehicles to electric by the decade’s end.
He also discussed Pakistan’s national adaptation plan and carbon market framework, underscoring the necessity of international support to meet these climate goals.
