Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has instructed authorities to ensure internet availability across Pakistan and facilitate access to technology as part of efforts to promote a cashless economy. During a review meeting in Islamabad, the Prime Minister underscored the government’s commitment to digital financial systems, emphasizing the importance of a cashless economy in national priorities.
According to Radio Pakistan, the Prime Minister acknowledged the Ministry of Finance and other state institutions for their progress in advancing cashless transactions. He called for a clear roadmap with specific timelines and targets to establish a fully digital payment system nationwide. Addressing issues faced by consumers in the digital payment system and ensuring nationwide internet access were also highlighted as immediate priorities.
Shehbaz Sharif directed the continuation of the Raast QR Code initiative, a government-backed program to facilitate digital transactions between consumers and merchants, and stressed its role in the government’s cashless economy vision. He also advocated for an effective media campaign to encourage utility bill payments through QR codes and urged all ministries to implement the cashless economy plan fully.
The meeting was briefed on the rapid progress in digitizing payments within federal and provincial institutions, with expectations to complete the process by December. It was noted that all payments under the Benazir Income Support Program are now made through digital wallets, and efforts are underway to introduce advanced payment systems in areas lacking internet access. Starting from the 16th of this month, payments through the Asaan Assignment Accounts will transition to the Raast digital system, with training for relevant officers already completed.
