Islamabad, 17 Oct 2023:In a recent exclusive interview with China Daily, Pakistani Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar emphasized the significance of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in promoting inclusive development, reducing poverty and inequality, and boosting the economic capacities of participating countries. Kakar underscored the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a flagship project under the BRI, as an epitome of cooperative success and mutual prosperity between the two nations.
The Prime Minister refuted claims suggesting the BRI led nations into debt traps, highlighting China’s distinctive development financing approach for developing countries. Detailing the benefits CPEC brought to Pakistan, Kakar stated that the project ushered in a direct investment of 25.4 billion dollars, resulting in the creation of 236,000 jobs. He emphasized CPEC’s impact as a symbol of inclusive development that aids all regions and societal segments.
Specifically mentioning the advancements in Gwadar Port, Kakar noted its ongoing operations, which include handling cargo ships and facilitating transshipment trade for Afghanistan. He also hinted at the establishment of a free economic zone in Gwadar, presenting enticing incentives for investors from various nations, including China. Additionally, Kakar disclosed plans for a new international airport in Gwadar to further augment its vision as a central hub for regional trade.
Addressing concerns regarding the safety of Chinese workers in Pakistan, the Prime Minister assured stringent security protocols, emphasizing regular risk assessments, security briefings, and bilateral information exchanges to preempt potential threats.
Attending the Third Belt and Road Forum in Beijing, Kakar expressed the forum’s significance in reinforcing international cooperation, celebrating achievements, understanding lessons, and shaping the CPEC’s future direction.
Reiterating the strength of Pakistan-China ties, Kakar hailed China as a reliable strategic partner and lauded China’s accomplishments, particularly the elevation of over 800 million citizens out of poverty.
