PM directs to enact new laws for the protection of farmers’ rights

Islamabad, February 07, 2022 (PPI-OT):Prime Minister Imran Khan has directed to enact new laws for the protection of farmers’ rights. Chairing a meeting on increasing agriculture specifically cotton productivity in the country, in Islamabad on Monday, he said in this regard consultation with all stakeholders should be ensured. The Prime Minister said use of modern technology is indispensable for increasing the production of cotton. He said the benefit of Kisan Card should be properly given to farmers.

The meeting approved in principle the establishment of Pakistan Cotton Authority. The authority will ensure supply of quality seeds and conduct research to increase productivity. The meeting also approved new laws for the protection of cotton growers’ rights. To ensure timely production of quality cotton seed, the meeting approved the formation of inter-ministerial committee.

The meeting was informed that sufficient stock of around 4.17 million tons of wheat is available at present. It was apprised that the federal and provincial governments are jointly providing 15.5 billion rupees subsidy on fertilizer.

The meeting was briefed that as per the directions of the Prime Minister, a Farmers’ Forum has been set up under the chairmanship of the Minister for Food Security. The purpose of this forum is to ensure representation of farmers in policy matters and to resolve their issues expeditiously.

The Prime Minister also approved the convening of a National Cotton Conference. The Prime Minister directed the Ministry of Industries and Production to prepare a feasibility for setting up plants for local production of DAP in the country.
