Islamabad, April 21, 2023 (PPI-OT):Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed to deal hoarders of sugar with an iron hand and said that nobody will be allowed to make an undue profit by increasing prices of the essential commodities, especially sugar, on higher prices. He gave these directions, while chairing a meeting on sugar price and steps to curtail hoarding and smuggling of the commodity in Lahore on Friday.
The Prime Minister said strict action will be taken against those involved in the smuggling of sugar and creating an artificial shortage of the commodity. He instructed the Ministry of National Food Security to include all the stakeholders in the consultative process while determining the ex-mill rate of sugar. He said the seized stocks of sugar should be made available for sale to consumers at cheaper rates.
The meeting was informed in detail about the current ex-mill price of sugar, the cost estimate after the data provided by the Ministry of Food Security, and the existing stocks of sugar in the country. The meeting was also briefed about the ongoing crackdown against hoarders and measures to prevent sugar smuggling. Minister for National Food Security and Research Tariq Bashir Cheema, Caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab Syed Mohsin Naqvi, and other high officials attended the meeting.
