Planning Minister Briefed on Climate-Smart Public Investment Framework by IMF

Islamabad, Muhammad Sami Saeed, the caretaker Minister for Planning, Development & Special Initiatives, received a comprehensive briefing on the Public Investment Management Assessment (PIMA) and Climate-PIMA, along with a suggested action plan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The briefing, which took place in a meeting chaired by the Planning Minister, was attended by key officials from the Planning Ministry and various stakeholders.

According to Press Information Department, the meeting included the Secretary of the Planning Ministry, Member Climate Change & Food Security, Chief Growth & Employment at the Planning Commission, Joint Chief Economist (Ops), Joint Chief Economist for Macroeconomics at the Planning Commission, and other relevant stakeholders. The Chief Growth & Employment provided an in-depth briefing on PIMA and Climate-PIMA, focusing on the action plan which highlights the necessity of a Climate Responsive Public Investment Framework. This framework is designed to integrate climate considerations into the planning and execution of all development projects, aligning with Pakistan’s National Adaptation Plan (NAP) and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The action plan signifies Pakistan’s commitment to adopting climate-smart policies and practices.

During the meeting, the Planning Minister urged stakeholders to enhance the effectiveness of public investment by refining procedures and financing mechanisms. He stressed that the entire project cycle should be in sync with the emerging challenges in the economy, underscoring the importance of stimulating economic growth through strategic investments. The Minister also highlighted the need for improving project appraisal and evaluation processes. He reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to steering Pakistan towards a sustainable and resilient future, emphasizing the importance of integrating climate change considerations into national development strategies.
