Petroleum Division Defends SSGC and Its Leadership Amid Media Criticism

Islamabad, The Petroleum Division has issued a strong condemnation of the recent media campaign targeting the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC), its Chairperson, and Board of Directors, highlighting the company’s achievements and leadership.

According to Press Information Department, the Division denounced the negative portrayal of SSGC in electronic, print, and social media. It lauded the efforts of Chairperson Dr. Shamshad Akhter and the Board members, who have been at the helm since 2019. Under Dr. Akhter’s leadership, the Division noted, SSGC has realized significant advancements in technology upgrades, business operations, human resources, policy formulation, discipline, risk management, and notably, in reducing Unaccounted-for Gas (UFG).

The Division emphasized that the Chairperson and Board members operate as a cohesive unit, making decisions collectively and contributing substantially to various critical areas, including budgetary systems, audit, finances, and UFG strategies. It praised the reduction of UFG in Sindh province from 15% to 7%, attributing this achievement to the effective management approach of the SSGC Board, particularly its Chairperson.

The Board’s involvement, the Division noted, is primarily in policy and strategic decision-making, delegating implementation to the management team. The Board’s commitment to HR and institutional reforms has been steadfast, recognizing their essential role in transforming SSGC. This includes the institutionalization of high-quality performance assessments and results-based accountability.

The Division also highlighted the development and implementation of the New Employment Handbook under the Board’s oversight. Dr. Shamshad Akhter, in recognition of her professional commitment, has been nominated by the government for another tenure as the Chairperson of the Board of Directors, with upcoming elections to formalize this.

The Petroleum Division reiterated its full support and trust in SSGC, its Board, and Dr. Shamshad Akhter in all legal, governance, and financial matters. It expressed concern that negative reporting could undermine the confidence of private shareholders and the employees of SSGC. The Division urged the media to report positively, considering the substantial progress achieved under Dr. Akhter’s leadership and the collective efforts to contribute to the growth of Pakistan’s energy sector.
