“PDP President Mehbooba Mufti Anticipates Adverse SC Verdict on Article 370 in IIOJK”

Karachi, Mehbooba Mufti, the President of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), expressed concerns over recent actions by the Jammu and Kashmir administration, indicating an unfavorable upcoming verdict from the Indian Supreme Court regarding Article 370. This Article, which was abrogated on August 5, 2019, previously granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

According to Kashmir Media Service, speaking to reporters in the Islamabad district of occupied Jammu and Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti emphasized that the Supreme Court’s decision should categorically declare the actions taken by the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Indian government in 2019 as “illegal, unconstitutional,” and against the interests of Jammu and Kashmir and its people. She highlighted the prolonged duration taken by the Supreme Court, five years, to address these cases and pointed out that previous rulings asserted that only the constituent Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir could annul Article 370.

The Indian Supreme Court is expected to announce its verdict on Monday regarding the petitions challenging the abrogation of Article 370. This ruling is anticipated after a five-member bench, headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, reserved its verdict in September on over 20 petitions. These petitions challenge the Indian government’s decisions to revoke Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and its reorganization into two Union Territories in 2019.

The impending decision has drawn significant attention, as it will determine the legal standing of the Indian government’s actions and their implications for the region’s autonomy and rights.
