PDMA Sindh Enhances Heatwave Response with Stabilization Camps and Public Awareness Campaigns

Karachi: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Sindh has issued an update on their ongoing efforts to manage the intense heatwave affecting the region from May to July 2024. The authority has been actively expanding its response capabilities, including the establishment of numerous heat stabilization camps and the execution of comprehensive public awareness campaigns.

According to Provincial Disaster Management Authority, the period between May 21 and July 20 saw significant activity aimed at mitigating the impact of the heatwave. A total of 294 heat stabilization camps were established in various districts by PDMA in collaboration with 40 humanitarian partners. These camps have played a crucial role in providing immediate relief and medical assistance to those affected by the severe temperatures.

Efforts to educate the public on the dangers of heatwaves were intensified, with the distribution of Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials and the execution of awareness sessions. These initiatives were bolstered by widespread publicity through banners and media content, which was carefully vetted and approved by PDMA.

The Deputy Commissioners and Chairmen of District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) have been actively involved, regularly visiting the heat stabilization camps to ensure they are effectively aiding the community. Additionally, these officials have spearheaded a plantation drive in several districts to promote environmental sustainability, which can contribute to longer-term climate resilience.

The PDMA’s coordinated approach with local authorities and humanitarian partners highlights a proactive stance in dealing with the heatwave crisis, emphasizing safety, preparedness, and community involvement in response efforts.
