Karachi: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of Sindh has intensified its efforts to mitigate the effects of the ongoing heatwave by setting up additional heat stabilization camps and enhancing public awareness programs across the region, as reported in their latest situation update.
According to Provincial Disaster Management Authority, between May 21 and July 16, PDMA Sindh, along with District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs), has closely monitored the escalating heat conditions. They have coordinated efforts across districts and with humanitarian partners to bolster the regional response to the heatwave. A total of 294 heat stabilization camps have been established, where awareness sessions on the risks associated with heatwaves are conducted. These camps also serve as crucial points for the safe transportation and referral of patients to heat stroke centers and hospitals.
The PDMA’s initiative includes the distribution of Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials, and the deployment of banners and other awareness-raising content through various media channels, all approved by the PDMA. In addition, Deputy Commissioners and Chairmen of DDMAs have undertaken regular visits to the camps, ensuring the effectiveness and reach of the services provided.
Furthermore, some districts have initiated a Plantation Drive, contributing to longer-term environmental strategies to combat the heat. This multi-faceted approach underscores the comprehensive efforts by local authorities and partners to safeguard communities against the severe impacts of the heatwave.
