ISLAMABAD: The joint sitting of Parliament has passed two resolutions endorsing the proclamations of emergency and Governor’s Rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, initiated by the President earlier this month. The session, presided over by National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, took place at the Parliament House in Islamabad.
According to Radio Pakistan, the resolutions were introduced by Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, who presented the presidential proclamations to the joint assembly. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar stressed the necessity of collaborative efforts to combat terrorism and safeguard the fundamental rights of the people in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar explained the constitutional requirements for the joint session’s approval of the proclamations. He noted that the decision to impose emergency measures was made due to the severe security situation in the province and the provincial government’s failure to adequately address these challenges. Tarar highlighted the lack of a forensic science laboratory in the province despite funds allocated for counterterrorism.
Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit Baltistan, Engineer Amir Muqam, criticized the previous PTI government for its lenient stance towards terrorists and stated that the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa support the imposition of emergency. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi discussed the federal government’s efforts to involve the provincial government in counterterrorism initiatives and emphasized the need for collective action.
Minister for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony Sardar Muhammad Yousaf and PPP leader Sherry Rehman also called for unity and cooperation to ensure national stability and development. The joint session concluded with expressions of hope that the new governance arrangement in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will restore peace.
