PESHAWAR, Dr. Syed Muhammad Ilyas, the Chief Executive of the Paraplegic Center Peshawar, emphasized the growing challenge of physical disabilities in an aging population. He noted that despite advancements in medical science increasing life expectancy, physical disability remains a critical issue needing comprehensive attention.
According to Directorate General Information and PRs – Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Dr. Ilyas discussed these concerns during a special program on Radio Pakhtunkhwa Peshawar, Darodermal, in observance of the International Day of Physical Disability. Speaking with the host, Dr. Latifullah Umarzai, Dr. Ilyas suggested that adopting proper diet and exercise regimes, like those in developed nations, could mitigate prevalent diseases and conditions, including diabetes and hypertension in Pakistan.
He also highlighted the risks associated with cousin marriages and underage motorcycle riding, which can lead to physical disabilities. Additionally, Dr. Ilyas pointed out the high number of patients with severe head injuries and spinal cord injuries from accidents in Pakistan, lamenting the lack of effective treatment institutions and calling for government and public attention at all levels.
The program also included tributes to Dr. Ilyas Syed for his selfless service in operating Pakistan’s only Spinal Cord Injury Institute and rehabilitating physically challenged individuals. Audience members and the host, Dr. Latif, advocated for the highest civil award to be bestowed upon Dr. Ilyas for his contributions.
