Pakistan’s Supreme Court Rules Civilian Trials in Military Courts Unconstitutional

ISLAMABAD, In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court of Pakistan pronounced that the trial of civilians in military courts is ultra vires the constitution, thereby making such proceedings unconstitutional. The apex court has further mandated the trial of 103 detained individuals to be shifted to civilian courts.

According to a new release by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the verdict was delivered by a five-member larger bench of the court, led by Justice Ijazul Ahsan, on Monday. This determination comes in the wake of the court’s previous action, where it had reserved the decision for this day after wrapping up the hearing process related to the case.
