Karachi, In an effort to address water management and support regional development, Pakistan’s Minister for Power, Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Laghari, has overseen a meeting dedicated to the advancement of small dam projects and the Murunj Dam initiative. The discussions aimed at hastening the feasibility studies and securing funding to kickstart these crucial infrastructural developments in areas prone to hill torrents, particularly Taunsa, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Rajanpur.
According to Press Information Department, the meeting convened on April 3, 2024, involved key political figures and officials from the National Engineering Services Pakistan (NESPAK) and the Irrigation Department. Minister Laghari emphasized the importance of inclusive consultations with all stakeholders in the feasibility process for constructing several small dams, which are expected to mitigate the effects of hill torrents in the region.
The Federal Minister also highlighted the progress of the Murunj Dam project, now forwarded to the Ministry of Water Resources for approval, signifying a potential milestone for agricultural and economic growth in Rajanpur. This project is heralded as a transformative initiative that could substantially alleviate poverty and enhance living standards in the affected areas.
Laghari’s firm commitment to accelerating these projects underscores the government’s resolve to improve water resource management and bolster economic development in some of Pakistan’s most vulnerable regions.
