Pakistan’s Nuclear Diplomacy Explored: Ambassador Zamir Akram Launches New Book at Embassy in Brussels

Islamabad, September 26, 2023 (PPI-OT): The Embassy of Pakistan in Brussels hosted the launch of the book titled “The Security Imperative – Pakistan’s Nuclear Deterrence and Diplomacy” authored by Ambassador Zamir Akram at the Brussels Press Club today. The event was attended by Brussels based Ambassadors, members of the diplomatic corps, and representatives from the think tank community and academia. In his remarks, Ambassador Zamir Akram highlighted that Pakistan’s determined pursuit of nuclear deterrence was not motivated by considerations of prestige and great power ambitions but driven by its acute, existential and evolving security challenges. He emphasized that the book provides a practitioner’s insight into the pivotal role played by Pakistan’s deft diplomacy in enabling the acquisition of nuclear deterrent capability. In her concluding remarks, Ambassador of Pakistan to European Union, Belgium and Luxembourg, Amna Baloch acknowledged the role that Ambassador Zamir Akram had played in projecting Pakistan’s nuclear diplomacy.

She underscored the need for fostering collaborations in an interconnected world to address global challenges. Ambassador Zamir Akram’s presentation of the book was followed by an interactive and candid discussions with the audience on various facets of nuclear deterrence, the future of the UN disarmament machinery and pathways for addressing regional and global security challenges. With a long and illustrious career in the Foreign Service of Pakistan, Ambassador Zamir Akram is a revered authority in the domain of Arms Control and Disarmament diplomacy. His last assignment was Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN and international organizations in Geneva including the Conference on Disarmament. He is presently serving as advisor to the Strategic Plans Division.
