Karachi, Caretaker Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani has made a decisive call to the United Nations Security Council, urging it to ensure the full implementation of its resolutions on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. This appeal comes in the wake of recent developments concerning the region’s status.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Foreign Minister Jilani has addressed letters to the leadership of the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the European Union. In these communications, he has highlighted the illegality of the recent Supreme Court of India’s judgment regarding the status of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
The Foreign Minister’s message strongly urges these international organizations to press India to cease its human rights violations in IIOJK. He calls for a reversal of all illegal and unilateral actions that India has undertaken since 5 August 2019. Jilani emphasizes that, under international law, domestic legislation and judicial verdicts cannot override the final status of an internationally recognized disputed territory.
Furthermore, he condemned the Indian authorities’ unlawful measures aimed at consolidating their occupation of IIOJK and systematically suppressing the rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The Foreign Minister decried the actions taken by India on 5 August 2019 and subsequent steps as attempts to alter the demographic structure and political landscape of IIOJK. He described these steps as a strategy to disempower the Kashmiri community in their homeland.
In his communications, Jilani Abbas Jilani labeled the recent judgment of the Supreme Court of India as a breach of international law and relevant UN Security Council resolutions. This statement from the Foreign Minister of Pakistan reflects the ongoing tension and complexity of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute on the international stage.
