Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Appeals to International Bodies Over India’s Supreme Court Ruling on Kashmir

Karachi, Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani of Pakistan has taken a significant diplomatic step by writing to leaders of key international organizations, challenging the legality of the recent Indian Supreme Court judgment regarding the status of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). The Foreign Minister’s actions underscore Pakistan’s ongoing concerns about the situation in Kashmir and its international implications.

According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Jilani addressed his concerns to the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the European Union. In his letters, he stressed that international law does not recognize domestic legislation and judicial verdicts as determinants of the final status of a territory acknowledged internationally as disputed. He emphasized that such internal decisions cannot override international law and United Nations Security Council resolutions.

The Foreign Minister condemned India’s measures to solidify its control over IIOJK, highlighting the persistent suppression of the rights of the Kashmiri people. He referred to India’s actions on 5 August 2019 and subsequent steps, which he described as attempts to alter the demographic and political fabric of IIOJK, aiming to reduce the Kashmiri population to a marginalized status in their own land.

Jilani labeled the recent Indian Supreme Court judgment as a violation of international law and specific UN Security Council resolutions, notably Resolution 122 (1957). He argued that this endorsement of India’s actions does not supersede the mandates set out in the UN Security Council resolutions concerning Jammu and Kashmir.

The Foreign Minister called upon the UN Security Council to ensure the full enforcement of its resolutions on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. He urged the body to demand that India ceases its extensive human rights violations in IIOJK and reverses all illegal and unilateral actions taken since 5 August 2019.

This diplomatic initiative by Pakistan’s Foreign Minister represents a concerted effort to involve international organizations in addressing the long-standing and contentious issue of Kashmir’s status and the region’s ongoing human rights concerns.
