Pakistan’s Economic Resurgence and Strengthened UK Ties Highlighted in Westminster Meeting

London: Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, Ahsan Iqbal, underscored Pakistan’s robust economic and cultural connections with the United Kingdom during a meeting with British Parliamentarians at Portcullis House, Westminster, today. He emphasized ongoing efforts in Balochistan’s development and highlighted economic growth under the current government.

According to a statement by Press Information Department, the Minister detailed Pakistan’s historical influence as a development leader in the 1960s and the country’s current initiatives, particularly in Balochistan. Iqbal announced the completion of significant projects in Gwadar, such as a modern hospital, residential solarization, educational scholarships, a university, a technical center, water plants, roads, and the operational Gwadar Airport. He also emphasized the transformative potential of investments in Balochistan’s mining sector.

Iqbal shared key economic indicators under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s leadership, noting a reduction in inflation from 38% to 4% and a decrease in the policy rate from 23% to 13%. The stock market has experienced notable growth, with exports and remittances each increasing by 30% and IT exports rising by 34%.

Reflecting on past progress, Iqbal recalled the 6% growth rate achieved under Vision 2025 during the PML-N government’s tenure after 2013, despite challenges such as terrorism. He expressed regret over the economic disruptions since 2018 that hampered Pakistan’s long-term plans.

The Minister introduced the URAAN PAKISTAN initiative, a nationwide development strategy aimed at uplifting 240 million citizens. He emphasized its non-partisan nature, focusing on economic and social progress. Key components include programs for the diaspora, youth internships, and the “Champions of Reform” initiative for British-Pakistani collaboration in various sectors.

Iqbal reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to global partnerships, highlighting strategic ties with the UK, US, China, GCC, and EU. He encouraged enhanced trade and economic cooperation to achieve mutual prosperity and acknowledged the role of British Pakistanis in strengthening bilateral relations.

British MP Mohammad Yasin commended Iqbal’s development focus in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and congratulated him on his appointment as UK Trade Envoy for Pakistan. Iqbal expressed confidence in Yasin’s ability to boost economic ties between the nations. Accompanying the Minister was Dr. Mohammad Faisal, Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the UK.
