Islamabad: A high-level Pakistani delegation, led by Prime Minister’s Coordinator Romina Khurshid Alam, met with Mukhtar Babayev, President of COP29 and Azerbaijan’s Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, to discuss bilateral interests and collaborate on environmental sustainability and climate resilience goals.
According to Press Information Department, the meeting took place as part of the 29th Session of the Conference of Parties in Baku, where delegates from over 196 countries are negotiating climate finance, technology transfer, and capacity building. Alam commended the COP29 presidency and congratulated Babayev on the successful arrangement of the event. She emphasized Pakistan’s vulnerability to climate change impacts, despite its minimal contribution to global emissions, and highlighted the country’s need for $348 billion by 2030 to implement climate resilience plans.
Alam also noted the participation of Azerbaijan’s foreign minister in a high-level Climate Finance Roundtable organized by Pakistan, where support was voiced for developed countries to fulfill their climate finance commitments. The Pakistani delegation is actively working to strengthen international partnerships to push for enhanced global cooperation on climate finance and technology transfer. Alam stressed the importance of the Loss and Damage Fund established at COP27 and Pakistan’s commitment to advocating for its funding to address climate impacts in developing nations.
The discussion also covered Pakistan’s regional approach to tackling climate issues, with plans to host a conference for the Vulnerable Twenty Group (V20) countries. Both sides expressed hope that COP29 would result in concrete commitments from developed countries to support the climate finance needs of developing nations.
