Pakistani and Malaysian Officials Discuss Economic Partnerships in Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur: In a bid to bolster economic ties, Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan met with Malaysian Deputy Minister for Investment, Trade and Industry YB Liew Chin Tong on the fringes of the Pakistan-Malaysia Business and Investment Conference in Kuala Lumpur. The meeting took place amid a state visit by Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif.

The discussions primarily revolved around enhancing bilateral economic and trade relations between the two nations. The officials identified potential avenues for collaboration in sectors such as information technology, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, automotive, aviation, agro-food, and halal trade.

A significant outcome of the meeting was the signing of ten Memoranda of Understanding between Pakistani and Malaysian companies. These agreements, focused on the agro-food sector and the export of gelatine and seafood, aim to facilitate business-to-business collaborations.

Both leaders expressed satisfaction over the discussions held between Prime Ministers Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif. They highlighted a shared vision for expanded cooperation, particularly in manufacturing, technology, and green energy.

The meeting emphasized the necessity of accelerating the implementation and renewal of the Malaysia-Pakistan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. This agreement is seen as a vehicle for enhancing trade ties and fostering mutual economic growth.

The discussions also touched on strategies to enhance Pakistan’s export potential and attract Malaysian investments in key industries, underscoring a commitment to deepening economic partnerships.
