Pakistan Warns of ‘Precarious’ Situation in Kashmir at UN Committee

Islamabad: At a recent UN committee meeting, Pakistan highlighted the ongoing tensions in Jammu and Kashmir, labeling the situation as “precarious” and a potential trigger for regional and global conflict. This statement came amid concerns over India’s military buildup and its refusal to engage in dialogue regarding the disputed territory.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Ambassador Bilal Ahmad, Pakistan’s permanent representative to UN offices in Geneva, expressed these concerns during a speech to the UN General Assembly’s First Committee, which focuses on disarmament and international security issues. Ahmad detailed the extensive deployment of Indian military capabilities near the Pakistani border and criticized India for its significant arms imports and readiness to escalate nuclear tensions.

Ambassador Ahmad also highlighted the lack of progress on implementing United Nations Security Council resolutions that support the right to self-determination for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. He noted the potential for even minor incidents in the region to escalate into wider conflicts, which could lead to catastrophic consequences.

Moreover, Ahmad criticized India for rejecting Pakistan’s “Strategic Restraint Regime” proposal, aimed at fostering peace and stability through nuclear, missile, and conventional arms restraint alongside conflict resolution. He argued that without such measures, regional security remains at risk, and accused India of destabilizing the broader regional balance.

In his address, Ahmad called for a comprehensive peace approach, including the resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in line with UNSC resolutions and the wishes of the Kashmiri people, and mutual restraint measures between Pakistan and India.

The ambassador also lamented the inadequacies of the recent Pact for the Future, adopted by world leaders, in addressing global disputes and conflicts effectively, including the situation in Jammu and Kashmir.
