Pakistan Urges Global Action on Health Crises at World Health Assembly

Islamabad: Representing Pakistan at the 78th World Health Assembly, Federal Minister for Health Mr. Mustafa Kamal called for global accountability in addressing regional and humanitarian health challenges.

Minister Kamal condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza, focusing on attacks targeting hospitals and healthcare workers. He urged the international community to take action against the violence affecting Palestinian civilians, including children. “The brutality and oppression must stop. The world must hold Israel accountable,” he stated.

In discussions with the Palestinian Minister of Health, Kamal outlined a framework for providing medical assistance, emphasizing Pakistan’s support for Palestinian medical needs. “We stand with our Palestinian brothers and will provide all possible medical support to heal their wounds,” he affirmed.

Addressing South Asia’s issues, Kamal criticized India’s actions, including the destruction of a government dispensary and the use of water as a weapon. He emphasized the critical role of the Indus River system in Pakistan’s public health and expressed concern over threats to water security. “Using water as a weapon is a violation of human rights and international law,” he said.

In bilateral meetings with health ministers from Cuba, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Kingdom, Kamal discussed enhancing health cooperation and strengthening health systems through shared experiences.

Kamal also highlighted Pakistan’s efforts to begin domestic vaccine production to alleviate the strain on foreign reserves caused by imports. “We are actively exploring partnerships and investments to begin domestic vaccine manufacturing in Pakistan,” he stated.

Reaffirming national health priorities, Kamal emphasized the Government of Pakistan’s focus on polio eradication, expressing confidence in achieving a polio-free status with continued global support. “With continued global support, we are confident that we will soon achieve a polio-free Pakistan, Insha’Allah,” he concluded.
