Islamabad: On World Polio Day, Acting President Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani emphasized the urgent need for sustained efforts to combat polio in Pakistan, highlighting the importance of reaching every child with vaccinations. Despite progress in reducing polio cases, the virus persists, necessitating continued focus on vaccination campaigns and routine immunization.
According to Press Information Department, Gilani stressed that no child should be left unprotected due to gaps in vaccination access or missed opportunities. He highlighted the potential lifelong impacts of polio, including disability affecting mobility, education, and independence, underscoring the need for reliable vaccination services and timely interventions for children who miss doses.
The statement called for particular attention to areas with low vaccination coverage and difficult-to-reach children. Gilani emphasized the role of public trust, encouraging parents to engage with health professionals and highlighting the importance of community representatives, religious scholars, and local leaders in promoting vaccination cooperation.
Frontline health workers were recognized for their crucial role in vaccination efforts, with a call for the necessary support, resources, and security to ensure their safe reach to children. Gilani also urged authorities to maintain oversight of vaccination efforts, follow up on missed doses, and sustain progress made in each campaign, stressing the need for consistent action at both national and community levels.
