Islamabad: In a significant move towards restructuring the energy sector, Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari announced comprehensive reforms, including the privatization of distribution companies (DISCOs) and the restructuring of the National Transmission Company. The announcements were made at an event held in Islamabad today.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Minister Leghari detailed the ongoing negotiations with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to revise contract conditions in favor of more sustainable energy practices. He further announced that three of the country’s distribution companies would be privatized by the end of next year, marking a pivotal shift towards privatization in the energy sector.
The National Transmission Company is also set for significant changes, as it will be divided into three separate entities to enhance efficiency. One of these entities will specifically handle future projects, aiming to improve the reliability and capacity of Pakistan’s power transmission system.
These reforms are expected to enhance the operational efficiency and financial health of Pakistan’s power sector, aligning with broader economic recovery and growth objectives.
