Pakistan to Launch Universal Health Insurance, Says Caretaker Health Minister

ISLAMABAD, A new universal health insurance program is in development to enhance healthcare services across Pakistan, according to Caretaker Minister for Health Dr. Nadeem Jan. The program aims to extend comprehensive coverage, with an emphasis on aiding the country’s impoverished population.

According to Ministry of Information Broadcasting, Dr. Nadeem Jan elaborated on the government’s plans during a news conference in Islamabad today. He stated that the program is being crafted in collaboration with provincial authorities to ensure broad and equitable access to healthcare services.

The universal health insurance initiative is designed to be cost-free for the poorest segments of society, reflecting the government’s commitment to health equity. As part of efforts to bolster primary care, Dr. Nadeem Jan also announced the rehabilitation of five hundred Basic Health Units nationwide.

Acknowledging the multiple obstacles faced in health sector reform, Dr. Nadeem Jan reaffirmed the interim government’s dedication to implementing meaningful changes within its limited tenure. Additionally, the Minister disclosed plans for establishing a more effective system for managing diabetes and hepatitis treatment in government hospitals.

The digitization of real-time hospital data was highlighted as a key step towards upgrading the healthcare delivery system, allowing for enhanced patient care and facility management. In response to public concerns over healthcare services, Dr. Nadeem Jan concluded with the assurance that 80 percent of such complaints have been successfully addressed.
