Pakistan Stresses Self-Determination for Kashmir and Palestine for World Peace

New York: Pakistan’s acting Ambassador to the UN, Usman Jadoon, stated that true global peace cannot be achieved until the peoples of Kashmir and Palestine are granted their right to self-determination. This declaration came during a briefing with a 23-member delegation from the US War College at the Pakistan Mission in New York.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Ambassador Jadoon emphasized that self-determination is a core principle of the United Nations Charter and highlighted ongoing efforts to resolve the Kashmir dispute peacefully in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions. These resolutions call for a plebiscite under UN supervision to ascertain the wishes of the Kashmiri people.

During the meeting, the ambassador also addressed Pakistan’s role in combating terrorism, particularly the challenges posed by the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) using Afghan territory to target Pakistan. He voiced concerns about the TTP potentially aligning with other terrorist groups like Al-Qaeda, and the implications for regional peace and security.

Furthermore, Ambassador Jadoon discussed Pakistan’s support for an inclusive political landscape in Afghanistan, stressing the importance of education and employment opportunities for women while underscoring the necessity of focusing on counter-terrorism measures.

He also touched on the broader issues impacting developing countries, such as achieving sustainable development goals and combating climate change. He advocated for reform of the international financial system to support development in the Global South and opposed proposals to add more permanent members to the UN Security Council, suggesting instead an increase in non-permanent seats to enhance its effectiveness and accountability.

The briefing concluded with a question and answer session, covering a range of topics including the Kashmir dispute, India-Pakistan relations, the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, climate change threats, counter-terrorism efforts, and Pakistan’s objectives within the UN Security Council.
