New York, Ambassador Munir Akram, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, announced on Sunday that Pakistan is actively campaigning for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council. The country aims to use the position to address critical regional issues such as the situation in Kashmir and counter-terrorism efforts.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Ambassador Akram expressed optimism about Pakistan’s chances in the upcoming Security Council elections scheduled for June 6. Speaking virtually to the US-based Pakistan Students Association Coalition, he emphasized that securing a seat would place significant responsibilities on Pakistan to lead on various global issues, including the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, Afghanistan, and broader counter-terrorism initiatives. The ambassador highlighted Pakistan’s history on the council, noting its previous seven terms and the backing of the 55-member Asian Group for the 2025-26 term.
