Pakistan, Russia vow to boost trade, economic ties

Islamabad: In a significant development, Pakistan and Russia have pledged to enhance their trade and economic relations, with a focus on regional connectivity. The commitment was made during a meeting between Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the leaders discussed various avenues to bolster cooperation across several sectors including agriculture, food security, business, education, railways, science and technology. They emphasized the importance of creating stronger people-to-people ties.

The discussions highlighted the potential for increased bilateral cooperation in agriculture and the exploration of joint ventures that would benefit both nations. President Zardari proposed the idea of barter trade and improvements in connectivity to strengthen economic ties.

Additionally, easing visa regulations and enhancing transportation links, such as railways and direct flights, were suggested to foster better business and cultural exchanges.

Deputy Prime Minister Overchuk expressed Russia’s intent to deepen cooperation in the fields of food security, science and technology, and education. He noted that the upcoming visit of the Russian Prime Minister to Pakistan would serve as a platform to further enhance the bilateral relationship.

Overchuk also reiterated Russia’s respect for all religions, including Muslim culture, and condemned any acts of desecration against the Holy Quran.

The meeting also touched upon the upcoming business expedition, with a 75-member Pakistani delegation scheduled to visit Russia to seek new business opportunities and economic partnerships.
