Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari declared Pakistan’s unwavering support for the Kashmiri people, emphasizing a commitment to stand with them in their pursuit of self-determination.
According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, President Zardari’s message on Kashmir Solidarity Day underscored Pakistan’s pledge to provide moral, diplomatic, and political backing to the Kashmiri cause. He highlighted the ongoing dispute over Jammu and Kashmir, pointing to India’s continued occupation against local wishes as a longstanding international issue.
The President referenced India’s actions on August 5, 2019, which he described as efforts to disempower the local population of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). Despite these measures, Zardari reiterated that the Kashmiris’ desire for self-determination remains strong.
He paid tribute to the resilience of the Kashmiri people, acknowledging their sacrifices over the past 78 years. Zardari criticized the human rights situation in IIOJK, noting the severe repression and violence faced by the population under Indian control.
The President highlighted the climate of fear and intimidation in the region, where political activists and human rights defenders face excessive force from Indian security forces. He called on the international community, particularly the United Nations, to uphold its commitments to the Kashmiri struggle for self-determination.
In closing, President Zardari affirmed Pakistan’s steadfast position in supporting the Kashmiri people, aligning with UN Security Council resolutions that advocate for their rights.
