Islamabad: Pakistan has reiterated its consistent policy on terrorism and foreign occupation, emphasizing the need to address the root causes of terrorism, including poverty and unresolved conflicts. This reaffirmation comes amid concerns that some media outlets have misrepresented its position.
According to a statement by Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the country’s stance remains unchanged and aligns with the international consensus on counter-terrorism and foreign occupation. The statement expressed regret over the distortion and misrepresentation of Pakistan’s position by certain media circles.
During a recent United Nations Security Council briefing, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative highlighted the importance of addressing underlying issues such as foreign occupation and denial of self-determination in territories like Palestine and Jammu and Kashmir. The representative stressed that focusing solely on the consequences of terrorism without tackling its root causes could yield limited success.
Pakistan, alongside the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), has long advocated for a comprehensive approach to counter-terrorism. This includes conflict resolution, ending foreign occupation, opposing oppression, and promoting sustainable economic growth. Their approach aligns with the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 60/288 on the “Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy.”
Furthermore, both Pakistan and the OIC maintain that definitions of terrorism should differentiate between acts of terrorism and legitimate struggles for self-determination under foreign or colonial rule. This distinction remains a cornerstone of Pakistan’s foreign policy and its commitment to international peace and security.
