Pakistan Reaffirms Humanitarian Commitment at Global Forum

GENEVA: At the 151st meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly, Pakistan reinforced its commitment to humanitarian principles, emphasizing their significance in shaping both national and international policies.

In his address, Senator Agha Shahzaib Durrani underscored humanitarianism as a core value of Pakistan’s identity. He highlighted the nation’s efforts to protect life and preserve dignity, even amid significant challenges and limited resources.

Durrani pointed to Pakistan’s longstanding role in hosting Afghan refugees since the 1980s, noting the country’s willingness to support millions despite economic and social strains. This humanitarian effort, he said, has been marked by sacrifices, including the loss of over 90,000 lives due to terrorism and cross-border militancy.

The senator also reiterated Pakistan’s support for the Palestinian cause, condemning Israeli aggression and advocating for international humanitarian law. He mentioned Pakistan’s humanitarian assistance to Gaza and its consistent backing for oppressed communities, such as those in Kashmir.

Domestically, Pakistan has implemented reforms through its National Action Plan to combat extremism and foster a society free from intolerance and hate.

Durrani highlighted Pakistan’s contribution to international peacekeeping, with thousands of troops participating in UN missions in Africa and the Middle East, often at great personal cost.

Concluding his remarks, Durrani emphasized that for Pakistan’s youth, humanitarianism is an obligation driven by justice and empathy. He called for continued global efforts to support refugees and hold accountable those who perpetrate violence, asserting Pakistan’s dedication to global peace and the protection of vulnerable populations.
