Islamabad: In a recent meeting with a European Union delegation, Pakistan reinforced its commitment to strengthening human rights frameworks and adhering to international conventions. The meeting, attended by the EU Special Representative for Human Rights, H.E. Ambassador Mr. Olof Skoog, and other officials, highlighted Pakistan’s dedication to human rights as a governance cornerstone and its collaboration with the EU.
According to a statement by Press Information Department, Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar, Federal Minister for Law and Justice and Human Rights, emphasized Pakistan’s progress in protecting human rights, including freedom of expression and civil society engagement. The meeting marked the approval of annual work plans by the Project Steering Committee at the Ministry of Human Rights, aiming for a structured approach to human rights advancement.
Notable measures discussed included mechanisms to protect journalists and human rights defenders, as well as an independent commission for journalists’ rights. The National Commission for Human Rights and the National Commission for Minorities Bill were highlighted as key elements in protecting religious minorities and ensuring legal security. A reduction in blasphemy cases was also noted.
The Minister detailed legislative changes, including amendments to narrow the scope of the death penalty and a draft bill proposing life imprisonment as an alternative for specific offenses. A survey on child labor is underway, and provinces are urged to set the minimum marriage age at 18 years.
The implementation of the Protection Against Harassment of Women at the Workplace (Amendment) Act, 2022, and the National Gender Policy Framework were cited as steps toward gender equality. Collaboration with UN Women on a National Policy to End Violence Against Women was also discussed.
The session concluded with mutual appreciation for the discussions and a commitment to further collaboration in promoting human rights. Both Pakistan and the EU acknowledged the value of sustained cooperation in advancing democracy and social justice.
