Pakistan Reaffirms Commitment to Fighting Poverty on International Day for Eradication of Poverty

Islamabad: Pakistan has renewed its commitment to combating poverty and reducing inequality at both national and international levels, as stated by Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif in a message marking the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of safeguarding citizens’ social and economic rights and ensuring equal opportunities for development.

According to Press Information Department, the global observance of this day aligns with the United Nations’ campaign for 2026-2028, themed “United for Peace and Human Rights,” with a focus on “A Safe Home for All” for 2026. This theme highlights the need for collective efforts to eradicate poverty and build a peaceful society. The Pakistani Government is working to provide affordable housing through initiatives such as the Prime Minister’s Apna Ghar Scheme, addressing financial challenges and the impacts of climate change on housing.

The Government’s strategies also include enhancing social protection and human development through initiatives like the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) and the launch of the National Socio Economic Registry and the Digital Social Protection Wallet. These efforts aim to ensure transparency and financial inclusion for beneficiaries.

Educational and vocational training initiatives, such as the Daanish Schools System and the strengthening of the National Vocational and Technical Training Commission (NAVTTC), are also part of the Government’s approach to equip citizens with necessary skills for sustainable livelihoods. Programs like the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme and the Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund are designed to improve infrastructure and reduce poverty.

Additionally, the Government has announced a special initiative to assist extremely poor and flood-affected households, providing them with comprehensive support to help lift them out of poverty.

The Government calls on provincial governments, development partners, civil society, the private sector, and local communities to join in collective efforts to build a secure and prosperous Pakistan.
