Islamabad, Pakistan has reasserted its commitment to enhancing the effectiveness of United Nations peacekeeping operations, aiming to make them more productive and impactful in maintaining global peace and security.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Munir Akram, expressed this commitment while hosting a delegation of military heads from a UN conference at the Pakistan Mission. During the briefing, Ambassador Akram underscored Pakistan’s long-standing and significant contributions to UN peacekeeping efforts, noting that over six decades, 235,000 Pakistani peacekeepers have participated in 48 missions worldwide.
Ambassador Akram emphasized that peacekeeping operations should be part of a comprehensive political strategy that addresses the root causes of conflicts. He articulated that this requires a deep and reflective approach to reforming peacekeeping strategies to ensure they are more aligned with the goals of the UN Charter.
The event also featured remarks from Major General Cheryl Pearce, Acting Military Adviser and representative of the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace. Major General Pearce praised Pakistan for its extensive contributions and noted the high cost paid by Pakistan in terms of lives lost in the pursuit of international peace, highlighting that no other country has sacrificed more in this noble endeavor.
