ISLAMABAD: On the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, Pakistan joined the global community in acknowledging the service of UN peacekeepers around the world. The nation paid tribute to the 181 Pakistani peacekeepers who have lost their lives in service, while emphasizing Pakistan’s ongoing role as a leading contributor to UN peacekeeping missions.
Pakistan has deployed over 235,000 peacekeepers in various missions globally, marking its significant contribution to maintaining international peace. The country hosts one of the oldest UN peacekeeping operations, the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP). Recent regional developments have highlighted the need to strengthen UNMOGIP’s presence, aligning with UN Security Council resolutions and addressing the Jammu and Kashmir issue.
As the world grapples with complex challenges, UN peacekeeping remains a vital mechanism for international security. There is a call for renewed political commitment to enhance UN peacekeeping operations through technological advancements and regional cooperation.
Pakistan recently co-hosted a UN Peacekeeping Ministerial Preparatory Meeting with South Korea, focusing on safer and more effective peacekeeping strategies. The outcomes are expected to foster new initiatives for improved peacekeeping efforts.
