Pakistan Raises Concerns Over Regional Security at UN, Cites India’s Military Posture

New York, In a resolute address at the United Nations, Pakistan’s Ambassador Munir Akram highlighted the deteriorating security situation in South Asia, attributing it to the deployment of destabilizing weapons and India’s aggressive military strategies. Akram’s statements reaffirmed Pakistan’s solidarity with the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and criticized the actions undermining regional peace and security.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Ambassador Akram outlined several factors exacerbating regional tensions, including the deployment of major destabilizing weapons, India’s sponsorship of terrorism against Pakistan, and the lack of constructive dialogue and international intervention. He warned that without decisive action from the global community, these issues could precipitate a regional and possibly global catastrophe.

The envoy referred to Pakistan’s post-nuclearization proposal for a ‘Strategic Restraint Regime’ aimed at establishing reciprocal limitations on nuclear, missile, and conventional capabilities, coupled with efforts to resolve outstanding disputes, particularly the protracted conflict over IIOJK.

During his address to the UN Disarmament Commission, Ambassador Akram expressed concerns over India’s policies and military acquisitions, labeling South Asia’s security environment as “volatile and explosive.” He lamented India’s growing arsenal and hostile doctrines, such as the “Cold Start” strategy, which anticipates a surprise attack on Pakistan, and the concept of a “limited war under the nuclear overhang.”

Highlighting India’s status as the world’s largest arms importer, Akram criticized the supply of nuclear, missile, conventional, and other destabilizing weapons to India by its ‘strategic partners.’ These developments, he argued, pose a significant threat to regional peace.

The remarks were made as Pakistan’s Usman Jadoon was elected Chairman of the Disarmament Commission’s 2024 session, underscoring Pakistan’s engagement and leadership on disarmament issues. Akram reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to securing security with minimal armament and recalled its proposal for a nuclear-weapon-free zone in South Asia a proposal undermined by India’s nuclear tests, to which Pakistan felt compelled to respond in kind.

Akram’s address calls attention to the critical need for disarmament and diplomatic efforts to address the underlying disputes fueling regional instability, particularly the situation in IIOJK.
